How to Pay Your HELP Debt: BPAY, Card, myGov

HD By HECS Debt Calculator Editorial· Updated 2026-09-28·8 min read

Key takeaways

To pay your HELP debt voluntarily, get your Payment Reference Number (PRN) from ATO online services through myGov or the ATO app, then pay by BPAY using biller code 75556, by card, or by direct credit. To beat 1 June indexation, pay several business days before the end of May.

Knowing how to pay HELP debt is mostly about three details: the right PRN, the right payment channel and the right timing. Compulsory repayments already come out through your tax return and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) withholding system; this guide covers the voluntary payments you make yourself, whether a lump sum from a tax refund or a regular top-up. It walks through BPAY, card and myGov step by step, then shows the processing times that decide whether your payment beats indexation.

Before you pay: find your HELP debt balance and PRN

Every voluntary payment needs a Payment Reference Number. The PRN tells the ATO which account to credit. Use the wrong one and your money can land against an income tax account instead of your study loan, which then needs a phone call to move.

  1. Sign in to myGov and open the linked ATO online services, or open the ATO app.
  2. Go to the tax accounts area and select your study and training loan account (it may be labelled HELP or study loans).
  3. Check the balance. It already reflects the one-off 20% reduction applied to balances as at 1 June 2025, and the most recent 1 June indexation.
  4. Choose the option to make a payment and note the PRN shown for that account. Save it in your banking app so you can reuse it.

Your balance may lag a few weeks behind recent tax lodgments or compulsory repayments. If you are close to paying the debt off completely, wait for the latest assessment to process so you do not overpay. To model the effect of a lump sum before you commit, use our voluntary repayment calculator, which shows how much indexation a payment avoids and how many years it takes off the loan.

How to pay HELP debt: the payment methods compared

The ATO accepts voluntary study loan payments through several channels. They differ mainly in cost and in how quickly the payment is credited. Official details are on the ATO's Pay with BPAY page and its related how-to-pay pages.

Processing times are guides, not guarantees. The ATO credits the payment on the day it receives the funds, not the day you press "pay", so a Friday-night BPAY might not arrive until the following week.

Paying by BPAY step by step

BPAY is the most common way to make a HELP debt voluntary repayment because it is free and you can set it up once and reuse it.

  1. Log in to your internet or mobile banking and choose BPAY.
  2. Add a new biller with biller code 75556. Your bank should show the biller name as the Australian Taxation Office.
  3. Enter your study loan PRN in the reference field exactly as shown, with no spaces.
  4. Enter the amount and the payment date. Avoid scheduling for a weekend or public holiday.
  5. Save the receipt number. If the payment does not appear on your ATO account within about a week, the receipt is what the ATO will ask for.

Setting up regular payments

Most banks let you make a BPAY payment recurring. A fixed monthly amount is a practical way to chip away at the balance between tax returns, especially if your income is under the $69,528 compulsory threshold for 2026-27 and nothing is being withheld from your pay. Check your account a few days after the first scheduled payment to confirm it is landing on the study loan account.

Paying by card or through myGov

Card payments go through the ATO's third-party card payment service rather than directly to the ATO, which is why a fee applies. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are generally accepted; check the current fee percentage and card list on the ATO's how-to-pay pages before you pay, because providers and fees can change.

Timing your payment before 1 June indexation

Indexation is applied on 1 June to the balance that has been outstanding for more than 11 months. A voluntary payment only reduces that indexed balance if the ATO has received it before 1 June. For the 2027 cycle, work backwards from the calendar:

Payment methodSuggested latest date to payWhy
BPAYAbout a week before 1 June (around 24–25 May)Allows for bank cut-offs, the weekend and processing
Direct creditAbout a week before 1 JuneSame processing lag as BPAY
CardA few business days before 1 JuneFaster, but still not instant
Any method in the last 2 days of MayNot recommendedHigh risk the payment is credited after indexation

These are practical buffers, not ATO rules. The ATO usually publishes a reminder each May, and past years have suggested paying by around the last week of May. Check that reminder each year.

How much indexation you actually save

The saving is roughly the amount you pay multiplied by that year's indexation rate. A $5,000 payment made before 1 June when indexation is about 3% avoids around $150 of indexation that year, and slightly more over later years because the indexed amount would itself be indexed again. The saving is real but modest, which is why paying HELP debt early is a personal choice rather than an obvious win.

What happens after you pay

Common mistakes when paying HELP debt

Special situations when you pay HECS debt

Living overseas

If you move overseas for 183 days or more in a 12-month period, you must update your contact details with the ATO within 7 days of leaving and lodge an overseas income assessment (or a non-lodgment advice) each year. Any overseas-based repayment raised against your worldwide income can be paid with the same BPAY biller code 75556 from an Australian bank account, or by card from abroad. International transfers work too, but allow extra days and watch for bank fees that shave the amount received.

Paying a lump sum from a tax refund

A tax refund arrives in your bank account, not against your HELP balance. If you want it to reduce the debt, you have to pay it back in as a voluntary repayment using your PRN. Many people do this in July or August, which gives the payment almost a full year to reduce the next 1 June indexation.

Paying on someone else's behalf

Parents or partners can pay a HELP debt for you with BPAY, as long as they use your PRN. The payment counts as yours. Make sure the payer keeps the receipt and that you check your account afterwards, because a mistyped PRN can send the money to a stranger's account and take weeks to trace.

Worked example: a $3,000 payment in May

StepDateWhat happens
Check balance and PRN in myGovMon 17 MayBalance shows $18,400 after last year's assessment
BPAY $3,000 to biller 75556Tue 18 MayBank processes overnight
ATO receives and credits the paymentAround Thu 20 – Fri 21 MayBalance shows $15,400
1 June indexation1 JuneIndexation applies to about $15,400 instead of $18,400

At an indexation rate of about 3%, the payment saves roughly $90 of indexation in its first year. Dates and rates in this example are illustrative; use the calculator with your real balance and the latest rate before you pay HECS debt voluntarily.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BPAY biller code for HELP debt?

The ATO's BPAY biller code is 75556. Use the Payment Reference Number shown for your study loan account in ATO online services as the reference.

Where do I find my HELP debt PRN?

Log in to myGov, open ATO online services or the ATO app, go to your tax accounts and select the study and training loan account. The PRN is shown with the payment options.

When should I pay HELP debt to avoid indexation?

Indexation is applied on 1 June. Allow processing time: paying by BPAY around a week before 1 June is a sensible buffer. Payments credited on or after 1 June miss that year's saving.

Can I pay my HELP debt with a credit card?

Yes, through the ATO's card payment service online or by phone, but a card payment fee applies. BPAY and direct credit have no ATO fee.

Do voluntary payments stop compulsory HECS repayments?

No. If your repayment income is over the threshold and a balance remains, the compulsory repayment still applies. Once the debt is fully repaid, tell your employer to stop withholding.
